The Time Traveling Fashionista by Bianca Turetsky

I just love a cover design that is not only beautiful on the flap, but is equally beautiful underneath. That is the attention to detail that this weeks cover designer, Alison Impey, is known for. This is not the first time that Alison has been the featured designer on Shelf Candy, and I am sure that it wont be her last. I am just a huge fan of her Ghostgirl designs. I have managed to dig up some more interesting information on Alison than I was able to share before, so read on.
Synopsis
It was the perfect powdery pink gown, a long, draped skirt that flowed out from an empire waist, intricately detailed with shimmery gold thread and tiny silver beads. It was delicate and feminine, and Louise knew that no one at Fairview Junior High would have anything like it. She quickly plucked it out of the closet and announced that she had found The One.
Louise Lambert has always dreamed of movie starlets and exquisite gowns, and longs for the day when she can fill the closet of her normal suburban home with stylish treasures. But when she receives a mysterious invitation to a vintage fashion sale in the mail, her once painfully average life is magically transformed into a time—travel adventure.
Suddenly on board a luxurious cruise ship a hundred years ago, Louise relishes the glamour of this opulent age and slips into a life of secrets, dramma, and decadence.

Alison Impey is an award-winning designer. She has designed well over a 100 books, including New York Times bestsellers and Newbery Honor titles. She is an Associate Art Director at Little, Brown and Company in New York City.
“My career as a designer really began right here at Little, Brown and Company, but Ithink my desire to “design” became obvious to me when I was in college. Up until that time I had focused my creative energy on painting and drawing. I wanted to be an artist. When I got to college there were just so many new mediums to try. I found myself spending a lot of time in the printmaking studio and in the theater. I wanted to design costumes and sets. I never wanted to be on stage, but I loved the idea of contributing to the storytelling process. Oddly enough I think that experience, plus my love for the printmaking process and all the tactile elements of the paper and ink, really paved the way for my interest in making books.
After graduating from Bates College, I moved to New York City and set out to find a job. I met a few really great people right off the bat. Brian Floca, a children’s book author and illustrator, was one of the first people to put me in touch with designers that were working in publishing. It was his friend, Alyssa Morris, who soon became my boss and mentor. Alyssa was the Art Director at Little, Brown and Company and she hired me as her assistant. The timing was perfect because Little, Brown had just moved from Boston to New York and they were looking to grow. Over the years we’ve practically doubled in size and with that have come wonderful opportunities to work on some amazing projects.”
It is clear that Alison takes the time to not only read the book that she is designing for, but delves into the long and dedicated process of unearthing its every element. She is a master!

Thanks, Ashelynn. I am glad that you enjoy it. Thanks for stopping by.
Hi, Steph! Oh, my gosh!! All three of these covers are absolutely GORGEOUS. They're so full of dynamic movement! I am in love. Totally and irrevocably.
It's so great that Ms. Impey has designed a beautiful book underneath the book jacket, as you have so rightly pointed out. (I'm referring to the first volume, although I'm sure she'll do the same for the other two.) She is indeed a major talent in the book design world!
You know, this is the one meme in the book blogosphere that I really look forward to participating in, because I love book cover design so much! When looking for a particular book, I always try to get the edition with the most beautiful cover. Of course, this only works if the book's been in print for several years, and then, not every single book is released more than once or twice.
Anyway, I'd like to thank you for this wonderful meme, because I certaibly LOVE my Shelf Candy!!! : )
